So in this case, we measured from the house right here all the way out to the bark out here. You can see there's a chalk line there we made a shorter right there, in the beginning, we just made one that was you can't see it now it's covered up maybe a couple feet out and then we measured back to our first board the reason that we did the reference line. Most decking screws are 8-gauge and, while 2 1/2 inches is the minimum length needed to hold decking boards to the joists, 3-inch screws are commonly used to provide extra holding power against the upward pressure of shrinking or warping boards. Specialty decking materials have different requirements. I prefer 3.5-inch screws. Installing deck boards usually begins at the house wall and goes out toward the end, with the boards always running perpendicular to the joists. Measure from the outside edge of one rim joist to the outside edge of the other one to get the length of the first 2 deck boards. The board will shrink and warp in the opposite direction of the rings in the wood. The result is either cupping of the wood or a crowning, depending on which way you face the board. A board that is correctly installed right side up or bark side down will form a crown and allow water to run off the edges. After you demolish the old deck but before you start work on the new one, you'll need to make sure the wood on and in the house is still in good shape. Water leaking around an old deck ledger can cause significant damage to the house framing. The existing house rim and the lower support walls need to be solid enough to support the multi-ton weight of a deck filled with people. After the old deck is removed, you'll be able to tell if you can still use the house rim. Don't be too eager to rip apart and replace moist or discolored wood; it may still be intact below the surface. Jam a screwdriver into the wood in several places.
