We’ve visited Brussels in Belgium and we still feel like there’s more to uncover. As we pounded the pavement, bused our way through the city, and even climbed high above it. We discovered that there are more than just a few fun things to do in Brussels in Belgium.
Brussels is one of the most fun, overlooked cities in Europe. Both historic and modern, ornate and sleek, busy and quiet, the city has different personalities in only the span of a few blocks. There’s something new and different at every turn, and it keeps prompting us to come back. Cantillon Brewery is one of the best places to visit in Brussels for beer fans. This historic brewery makes only lambic beer, which spontaneously ferments with wild yeast, compared to most beers on the market that have a tightly-controlled fermentation process with specific strains of brewer’s yeast. The Grand Place in Brussels is hidden away in the center of the city but when you enter on foot, you are guaranteed to be left awestruck. At the center of the Grand Place is the beautiful 15th Century city hall but dotted around the square you will also be impressed by the six guild halls and their striking architecture. The square is worth visiting several times at different times of the day. On certain days there is a flower market in the square and visiting at night is recommended. The Old England Building in Brussels was formerly a department store and was built in the very last year of the 19th Century. The building attracts visitors because of its stunning facade but also due to the fascinating and vast musical museum it houses. The museum is home to more than 2000 musical instruments with historic value and gives guests a chance to listen to many of them. The cafe on the roof of the building provides memorable panoramic views of the city. This spectacular Gothic cathedral began life in the 14th Century when it was used as a chapel by the Archer’s Guild. It was extensively expanded in the next century to the popularity and supposed healing powers of the Madonna statue located within. The statue was allegedly stolen by a husband and wife team of thieves in a rowing boat. The location of the statue is unknown but the story is commemorated by a lifesize model inside the building. The Royal Palace in Brussels remains as their official residence. The palace is open for tourists in the summer months and makes a worthy addition to any itinerary whilst visiting the city. You can’t visit Belgium without trying some of its key gastronomic treats waffles and chocolate. The beautiful aroma of waffles permeates the city of Brussels. Your Gaufres come in two distinct types Brussels and Liege. The latter are stouter and doughier; in fact, moving towards doughnut territory in texture. And of course, you can have a vast variety of toppings from fruits to chocolate, caramel and ice cream. Your waffle tasting opportunities will range from splendid emporia with black aproned waiters to street carts and even waffle trucks.
